Karoobos Guest House - Farm Stall - Hofmeyer - Eastern Cape

Hofmeyer is a small farming village roughly half-way between Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth, some 60 km north of Cradock. The town used to be called Maraisburg but after some confusion with a town of the same name in the old “Transvaal”  this was changed. Jan Hendrik Hofmeyer, after whom the town was named, was interestingly one of the founders of the Afrikaans language and one of the first South African politicians of the old era to oppose segregation by race.

The warm hospitality, comfortable lodging and welcoming farm-store are well worth a visit. Look out for Karoobos in the middle of town. Karoobos offer self-catering accommodation in en-suite rooms which offer DSTV and in-room refreshment stations. Parking is secure and guests have use of a swimming pool.

The on-site licensed pub is a welcome visit after a hot days travelling, on site coffee shop and farm stall on the premises. The hosts offer hearty Karoo meals on request and their home-made pies are highly recommended.

The farm stall is the main attraction - famous for lamb, chicken and venison home-made pies. Do it all in one convenient location - drink coffee - have a Karoo meal - sleep over and enjoy some good old fashioned Karoo warmth and hospitality.

Coffee information

Karoobos has a professional coffee machine from Jura and they source freshly roasted, 100% Arabica, speciality coffee for their guests.

Coffee is at it’s best if it is freshly roasted. South Africa has a number of speciality roasters dotted across the country and particularly in the larger centres such as Johannesburg and Cape Town. Beware the traps and romance that go with European names and American Cities and look out for two things: 100% Arabica and Freshly Roasted. We encourage all our members to source product from local suppliers wherever possible.
