A selection of shops, restaurants and accommodation establishments who are committed to offering guests coffee of a high quality

I am not just having a fling with coffee, we’re in a deep and meaningful relationship.

Coffee is way more than just a drink!

Coffee is first and foremost a massive and ancient business. Second only in value to oil, coffee has been around for some six hundred years or so. Rumours abound about a goatherd in Yemen who saw a goat acting strangely after eating the fruit of the Caffea Arabica tree but quite honestly who knows for sure?

What we do know for sure is that in South Africa, coffee shops are opening by the dozen each day, fuel stations are all installing proper machines and coffee-to-go and to-stay is big business.

Not all coffee is good coffee!

Here we get to the sad part! Even if one buys good coffee, do you know how to prepare it and serve it? The first trap is what really is good coffee? Coffee, like any foodstuff, gets stale and loses it’s quality… I am sticking my neck out for sure but much of the coffee that has been lying on a supermarket shelf is already stale. Your committed local coffee shop will, in more cases than not, be making sure that his coffee is fresh and this is the first step.

The next step is to ensure that the coffee was good to start off with. What was in the blend? Is the roast level the right one for your brewing system? Is it Arabica or Robusta? Is it freshly made or has that old pot of filter-brew been sitting around the breakfast room for a an hour or two?

The choke-n-puke variety

The big multi-national food chains are all offering coffee at their 1000’s of outlets around the world. Some better than others but let us real coffee lovers lift our hats to them, they have been fuelling the growing demand for good coffee and in doing so, have literally converted millions from tear-pack-instant into the world of real coffee. This has encouraged many businesses, from vehicle dealerships to hairdressers, to start serving decent coffee…thank you guys!
